Shadows creeping from darkness

a corner, a black, gaping mouth

fingers, long and jagged, slimy

slashing at flesh, bones and soul

there’s nowhere to hide or run

your life means nothing to the world.

Nor your hopes, nor loves or hates.

You pray, but those ears are deaf.

Lips dry and words not being uttered,

fingers squeeze your throat

memories, long dead, dance alive.

Friends and foes, you say goodbye,

heart wants to keep on beating

But mind relents and succumbs

eyes close, lips ready for last kiss.

Is anyone waiting out there for me?
